The Full Wolf Moon: New Luck for a New Year

“The night is dark, the world is still, Seeds rest beneath snow-covered hills. Waiting for spring, I turn within, Change and growth can now begin. Through clearer sight and strength of will, We find renewal in winter’s chill."

Traditionally this full Moon appeared when wolves howled in hunger outside the villages. It is also known as the Old Moon. To some Native American tribes, this was the Snow Moon, but most applied that name to the next full Moon, in February. For us, it is the Wolf moon. Our wolves may be metaphorical, but we can still hear their howls echoing in the darkness.

January is here and with it the Full Wolf Moon, the first full moon of the new year. Roots and seeds are dormant beneath the cold earth and a chill wind blows across barren fields. The land is dressed in greys, browns, and whites as winter begins to bare its teeth in much of the northern hemisphere. The garden is deep in slumber, dreaming of spring and the greening of the earth to come; so to are we. Winter is a time to look within. To reflect and grow in our own personal dormancy. It is a time to plan for the greening in our lives just as we plan for the greening in our gardens.

The Glades Edge gathered on the unseasonably warm night of the full moon to do just that. For us, this moon reflected in us what we needed prune back in our lives and what we needed to help grow. To reflect on what is truly important to us in the coming green season. It is a time to plan our gardens, both literally and metaphorically. A search to leave behind that which does not serve us and welcome in all the goodness the new year can bring.

We worked our magic under the light of a stunning full moon, letting her brilliance infuse our workings and be our light in dark places. May the spirit of love, hope, and excitement infuse the months to come as we continue on our journey off the beaten path.

We held a simple but profound ritual that revolved around leaving a challenging year behind us and moving forward into the new changes that the coming year will bring. At one point turning our backs to the fire and throwing a match into the flames. symbolically burning the trials and challenges of the old year to create a fresh start to the new one, clearing the way for new growth. We created energy bags during our circle that will also double as wishing bags for the coming months. Hand sewn and filled with our hopes and intentions, anointed with oil and sealed with all of the hope that the future brings. It is our intention to add to these bags as the wheel turns, adding to the energies we wish to manifest.

When the ritual was finished it was a time to reconnect and plan for the future within our Glade. We have both been experiencing a lot of changes in the last few months and it is an ongoing process to go with the flow even if we are not quite sure where that flow is heading. We have each other, wonderful families, and a spiritual family; a recipe for a great year.

The tradition we are a part of, The Forest's Edge, has an exciting year that is coming into focus and we are looking forward to being a part of that. We have been tossing around some ideas with the focus of becoming more immersed into the Tradition in the coming year. Our initiation is approaching with increasing swiftness and we have much to explore before then. With many new seekers beginning their Tradition classes next month we are looking forward to meeting new friends and watching the Tradition grow and evolve as it is want to do.

We are excited for the year to come and the pleasure of sharing the magical moments to come with you! Keep an eye out for more Full Moon gatherings, book reviews, topics of the month, and our general and random meanderings.

Blessings, be well.
